Switzerland tops postal operating rankings third year running

09.10.2019 - CEO of Swiss Post Roberto Cirillo attended an awards ceremony held today at the Berne, Switzerland, headquarters of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

Mr Cirillo was receiving the top prize in the awards ceremony for the UPU’s third annual ranking of global postal services, also known as 2IPD.

In his remarks to an audience comprised of the diplomatic community and the UPU staff, the Chief Executive Officer said it was an honour to receive the prize on behalf of Swiss Post.

He paid warm tribute to Swiss Post’s employees who, he said, were delivering every single day. He also noted that the company was committed to public service.

The UPU Deputy Director General Pascal Clivaz said in his own statement, “Several years ago we created a tool that could help us benchmark the performance of the global postal network, known as the Integrated Index for Postal Development, or 2IPD.”

Mr Clivaz said the Postal Development Report containing the index had accessed billions of records of postal big data, official UPU statistics and UPU surveys to offer a comparative ranking of postal development across 170 countries.

The Netherlands received second prize, followed by Germany. Poland, China (People’s Rep.), Tunisia, and Nigeria also received prizes for their leadership in their respective developing regions. Colombia was also a regional champion but was not represented at the ceremony.

Prior to the awards ceremony, guests had listened to good will messages on World Post Day, 9 October,  delivered by Mr Kenan Bozgeyik, the Chair of the Council of Administration and Director General of Turkish Post and Mr Masahiko Metoki, the Chair of the Postal Operations Council and Senior Vice President of International Relations at Japan Post.

The 2IPD event is just one of many held by the UPU on World Post Day. The ninth of October was first declared World Post Day at the Universal Postal Union’s Congress in Tokyo in 1969.  Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the global celebrations.

The Universal Postal Union is a UN specialized agency with its headquarters in the Swiss capital Berne. Established in 1874, it is one of the world’s oldest international organizations and is the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players.
